uk techno veteran broom is one of the most consistent producers in the game and on neon, he delivers four killer dance floor tracks. inspired in equal parts by the swirling, dub techno of chain reaction and the insistent, loopy techno of mid to late-90s jeff mills, the release starts with the steel-plate percussion and churning chord builds of -m19-. broom keeps his focus on that approach for -energy-, where doubled-up claps and clanging chords create an eerie but urgent sensibility, while the title track is a slightly less visceral affair thanks to the inclusion of a sleepy vocal sample amid the churning keys. finally, -involver- sees broom focus his energies elsewhere, its acidic, grimy groove coming across like steve bicknell in a bad mood.

a industrial callous, caustic and fervently cruel ep. contort yourself has once again gathered the best and boldest from past and present for its fourth ep. to begin with we have the grimacing visage of volition immanent, an intense live act made up of parrish smith and mark van de maat (knekelhuis). behind rawkish distortion, splintered beats and acrid bars screams a boiled anger, a track spitting on the divides of punk and electronics. nastiness is taken up a notch as noise ne er-do-wells zombies under stress take over. static is bent and doubled across thick chords and collapsed clap in the 1986 -maan zal zijn before the raw and raging battery of in onze tijd. l.i.e.s. regular svengalisghost grapples with maan zal zijn, channelling the originals rage into a mechanical monster. the 12inch is bookended with bite as mark forshaw (tabernacle/berceuse heroique) closes with the tortured and torrential thump of submission.

former co-owner of mr peabody infamous record store in chicago, exquisite music connoisseur, deep dj and fresh sounds familiar member mark grusane provides the next in the series of sf 45s. space mountain is a funk fusion monster while in fifth dimension mark shows his darker side pushing the electro/new wave envelope and even providing vocals. once again a sounds familiar winner and another demonstration of marks rich musical palette.

mark e last delivered on futureboogie back in november 2014, so it’s a welcome return to the label for the birmingham based dj & producer. with his merc imprint running on full steam, and previous releases on revered labels like spectral sound and running back, mark is becoming an ever dependent exponent of the real and raw house music vibe, and no more so than on the basement trax ep. basement trax 1, distorted synths wander over a low-slung beat, the marching hi-hats and filter work are tweaked to perfection. it’s a track of basic elements, but done so well, the arrangement building steadily and bags of warmth and soul deep at the heart of this track. the gnarly bass and classic string sounds of basement trax 2 make an ideal companion piece to the a side. delivered in the finest wild-pitch tradition, the raw sounding production packs a punch as the stomping drums and repetitive keys ramp up the heat for a real blazer of an underground club cut.

its a rare moment in the life of hoods m-plant when he hands over to another producer, but no surprise that he should pick mark broom for the next release, seeing as hes previously been entrusted to provide edits of hoods tracks for mpm19.
